What Data We Collect
Watercolor Birds is designed to be a privacy-respecting tool. Here's what we do and don't collect:
- Location data: If you use "Find Birds Near Me," your browser requests your GPS coordinates. These are sent to our server only to query the eBird API and are not stored or logged.
- Bird & color queries: The bird names and watercolor brands you enter in the Color Advisor are sent to the Claude AI API to generate your palette. These are not associated with you personally and are not stored after the response is returned.
- Contact form submissions: If you use the contact form, we receive your name, email, and message. We use this only to reply to you.
- No cookies or tracking: We do not use analytics cookies, advertising trackers, or fingerprinting.
Third-Party Services
This site uses the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:
- eBird API (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) — receives your approximate location to return nearby bird observations.
- Wikipedia / Wikimedia REST API — used to retrieve bird descriptions and images.
- Anthropic Claude API — receives bird names and brand names to generate color palettes.
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim — used for reverse geocoding your GPS coordinates to a city name.
- Cloudflare — hosts this site and may process request metadata (IP address, headers) per their standard terms.
Data Retention
We do not operate a database of user data. Palette history is stored in your browser's session storage and is deleted when you close your browser tab. We have no access to this data.
Children's Privacy
This site is intended for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
